RALEIGH- The North Carolina filmed comedy feature Masterminds finally comes to theaters across the world this week.
The comedy, based on actual events that took place in the Charlotte area, was produced by Relativity Media and stars Owen Wilson (Wedding Crashers, Night at the Museum, NC-filmed Are You Here), Zach Galifianakis (The Hangover, The Campaign, NC-filmed Are You Here), Kristin Wiig (Bridesmaids, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty) and Jason Sudeikis (NC-filmed We’re The Millers, Horrible Bosses) among others.
Masterminds, which filmed in the summer of 2014 in Buncombe, Haywood, and Macon counties under the name “Untitled Armored Car,” is the story of how a night guard at an armored car company in the Southern U.S. organizes one of the biggest bank heists in American history and what followed afterwards. The production, which was heavily recruited by the North Carolina Film Office over the course of two years prior to the start of filming, had a direct in-state spend $18,120,705 while creating 982 job opportunities—of which an estimated 300 were crew positions for the state’s full-time, highly-skilled film technicians and professionals--according to an audit conducted by the NC Department of Revenue.
The comedy was one of more than 50 productions that filmed in North Carolina in 2014 who all combined had a direct spend in excess of $315 million while creating more than 19,000 job opportunities while filming in more than 35 of the state’s counties.
